Active infestations usually show fresh, pale frass (fine powder) beneath clean-edged exit holes, and you may see new dust appearing over time. Old, historical holes tend to be darker, weathered and produce no new frass — often from an infestation that died out long ago. Historical damage generally does not need chemical treatment. Yes. Emerging adult beetles can fly to and lay eggs in other susceptible timber — furniture, flooring, joinery and structural framing — so an untreated item can seed a wider problem, especially with the common furniture beetle. Treating affected timber and monitoring nearby susceptible items is the safest approach, and keeping timber dry and sealed reduces the risk of new attack.

We provide a timber treatment record and, where applicable, a clearance certificate documenting what was inspected and treated — the paperwork builders, buyers and insurers often request. For a property purchase, a pre-purchase timber pest inspection is a separate report on the condition of the timber and evidence of pests; tell us if you need that so we can arrange the correct service.

We inspect the timbers, then drill and micro-inject affected sections and apply a residual surface barrier so the product reaches feeding larvae and protects against re-attack. The on-site work usually takes a few hours depending on property size and access. Knockdown occurs over the following days to weeks as larvae ingest the product, and new frass and emergence taper off — difficult subfloor or roof access can add time.
